I am Dr. Melissa Gartenberg Livney, a licensed psychologist in an independent practice with a geriatric concentration in Rosemont, PA. I engage in individual, group, and family therapy with the objective of helping older adults and the younger adults in their lives.
I developed my interest in aging as a psychology major at the University of Michigan where I studied issues relevant across the lifespan. I began my career helping to establish a Boston based non-profit organization with an intergenerational mission involving middle school students and nursing home residents, and active community dwelling older adults in literacy training programs in urban elementary schools.
I went on to conduct graduate work at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University where I customized my training experience to focus on issues germane to later life, including integrating mental health care with primary care, and providing testing and evaluation in a dementia diagnostic clinic.
After completing a training year at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, I came to Philadelphia to join the Section of Geriatric Psychiatry and the Penn Memory Center at the University of Pennsylvania. There I established the psychotherapy outpatient component of that division working closely with the attending psychiatrist, providing training to medical residents and fellows interested in a career in geriatrics. I also created programming to support people caring for relatives with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias and to engage individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment. I now enjoy seeing patients solely within my private practice, but take active care to collaborate with other providers at area medical groups as necessary.
